How is the Wind Formed?
The
wind is a natural phenomenon caused by the movement of air, and its formation
is mainly related to the following factors:
Pressure Difference
The uneven distribution of solar radiation on the
Earth's surface leads to different heating in various regions. In areas with
more heat absorption, the air heats up, expands, and rises. As a result, the
air density near the ground decreases, forming a low-pressure area. In areas
with less heat absorption, the air cools, contracts, and sinks, increasing the
air density near the ground and forming a high-pressure area.
Coriolis Force
The rotation of the Earth generates the Coriolis force.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Coriolis force causes the direction of air
movement to deflect to the right; in the Southern Hemisphere, it deflects to
the left.
Topographic Undulations
Terrains such as mountains and plateaus can block the
flow of air, altering the direction and speed of the wind. For example, when
air encounters a mountain range, it is forced to rise along the slopes. On the
leeward side of the mountain, the air will sink, resulting in different wind
directions and speeds.
Distribution of Land and Sea
There is a significant difference in the thermal
properties between land and sea. During the day, the land heats up faster than
the sea. The air over the land heats up and rises, and the air from the sea
flows towards the land, forming a sea breeze. At night, the land cools down
faster than the sea. The air over the land cools and sinks, and the air on the
land flows towards the sea, forming a land breeze.
In
addition, seasonal changes can also lead to changes in large-scale pressure
systems, thereby forming winds with different characteristics, such as monsoons.
